Custom Connector Setup

Claude.ai Custom Connector (OAuth 2.1)

Set up Precept as a Custom Connector in your Claude.ai interface. This works across both the Claude.ai Web client and Claude Desktop, leveraging our secure, deployed OAuth 2.1 flow.

Sign Up & Get Your Precept API Key

Before setting up the connector in Claude, make sure you have your Precept API key ready:

  1. Sign up for an account or log in at app.preceptai.co.uk.
  2. Navigate to the Developer Dashboard.
  3. Click Generate New API Key (or copy your existing key).

Copy the key to your clipboard (starts with pt_ or precept_sk_...). You will paste it during Step 6 to authorize Claude.

Open Claude Settings

Log in to your Claude.ai account. On the left side bar, select Customize, and navigate to the Connectors tab.

Add Custom Connector

Click the Add Custom Connector option from the dropdown menu (or the "+" button in the top right of the connectors panel).

Enter Connector details

Fill out the form details using our hosted endpoint:

  • Name: Precept AI
  • Remote MCP Server URL: https://precept-mcp-server-production.up.railway.app/mcp
  • Client ID: claude

Click the connect button and the browser opens

Under the Connectors settings, locate the newly added PreceptAI Custom connector under the Not connected list and click the Connect button. A new browser tab will automatically open to begin the authorization process.

Enter Precept API Key and Authorize

In the browser pop-up window, paste your secure Precept API Key (copied in Step 1) and click the Authorize Connector button to approve the integration.

You are now fully connected

Once authorized, the page will display a Connected success state and a redirect action. The connection between Claude and your Precept intelligence server is now fully established, and you can close the browser tab.

Precept tools in Claude

When you return to the Claude application, the PreceptAI connector will show the list of available research tools. We highly recommend clicking the permission dropdown in the top-right corner and changing it to Always allow to prevent Claude from prompting you for approval on every message.

Example Usage in Claude

Once connected, Claude can natively use Precept to retrieve sales leads, find companies, and generate B2B intelligence tables in real-time.

Maintenance & Sync

How to Refresh & Update Precept Tools

When we release new tools or update parameters, Claude caches your existing tool definitions. Follow these steps whenever you need to re-sync with the latest Precept server:

  1. Open Settings in Claude (Desktop or Web).
  2. Navigate to the Connectors menu.
  3. Locate PreceptAI in your connectors list.
  4. Click the three dots (...) on the right side of the card.
  5. Select Refresh tools list.
đź’ˇ Tip: If Claude reports an schema mismatch or an out-of-sync error, refreshing the tool list immediately resolves it without having to re-authenticate.

Available Tools

The Precept MCP server gives Claude 13 tools. Each one is labelled Read-only (only looks things up), Uses credits (spends Precept credits but changes nothing else), or Takes action (creates, changes or deletes something in your account, or acts on LinkedIn for you). Credit costs are starting prices. Options like phone numbers cost more; see pricing for full rates.

Lead discovery

Finds people who match a description of your ideal customer, such as job title, industry, company size and location. Can also add AI insights, verified emails and phone numbers, or a filter for people who recently engaged with posts on a topic.

Finds people who recently wrote LinkedIn posts on given keywords, in the past 24 hours, week or month. Each result includes the post they wrote.

Adds detail to contacts you already have, identified by LinkedIn URL or name and company: verified email and phone, professional summary, likely problems and initiatives. Can also draft a personalised email or LinkedIn message.

Creates, views, updates, lists and deletes recurring checks (every 7–30 days) for new job postings at chosen companies or matching a description, and finds decision makers at the hiring companies.

Data & Permissions

What Claude can see and do once Precept is connected, what Precept receives, and how to disconnect.

What Claude can access

  • Claude acts as the Precept account whose API key you used to connect. With an organisation key, it uses that organisation’s credits and data.
  • It can read your credit balance, search and enrichment results, subscriptions, campaign queue and message delivery status.
  • Lead and company results come from Precept’s database of business profiles and public company information. They don’t come from your private LinkedIn data.

What Claude can do for you

  • Spend Precept credits on searches and enrichments.
  • Create, change and delete job-posting and lead subscriptions.
  • Save lead lists to your Precept dashboard, and queue, pause or archive LinkedIn campaigns.
  • Send LinkedIn messages and connection requests from your LinkedIn account. This only works if you’ve installed the Precept Chrome extension and are signed in to LinkedIn in Chrome.
  • Send results to a webhook URL, but only if you give one.

What Precept receives

  • Only what Claude puts in each tool call, such as search descriptions, LinkedIn URLs, company websites and message text.
  • Precept doesn’t receive your conversation history, files, or data from your other tools.
  • Precept stores searches, results, subscriptions and campaigns in your Precept account, as described in our privacy policy.

How sign-in works

  • The connection uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE. You paste your Precept API key into Precept’s own authorisation page, never into a chat.
  • The key is encrypted (AES-256) before it’s stored. The one-time authorisation code expires after 5 minutes.
  • The app receives an access token that lasts 1 hour and a refresh token that lasts 90 days. It never sees your raw API key.

Staying in control

Claude lets you set approval per tool. If you choose Always allow for the research tools, we suggest leaving the Takes action tools (messaging, campaigns and subscriptions) on approval so you check each one before it runs. Check your balance at any time with precept_check_credits.

Disconnecting

  1. In Claude, go to Settings → Connectors, open PreceptAI and disconnect it.
  2. To cancel all existing access straight away, regenerate your API key on the Precept developer page. Anything using the old key stops working.
  3. To stop all LinkedIn activity, remove the Precept Chrome extension or archive your campaigns.
